Introducing Scrapbooking to Kids

© Angie Pedersen (angie@scrapyourstories.com)

When introducing scrapbooking to kids, it might help to pare it down to the five basic steps to creating a scrapbook layout. You can briefly go over information on acid-free materials, but depending on their age, this might go right over their heads. You might be better served to just offer them only suitable scrapping supplies, and wait till they're a little older. You can also provide a list of terms to look for on packaging, a checklist that might help when shopping on their own (acid-free, lignin-free, PVC-free, archival-quality, permanent, fadeproof, lightfast, etc).

The Five Basic Steps to Creating a Scrapbooking Layout

  1. Crop: i.e. "do you want that part of the room in your picture, or do you want to cut it out?" Or "would you like to keep this picture this shape, or do you want to make it a circle or oval?" Remind them we DO NOT CROP ONE-OF-A-KIND, IRREPLACEABLE PHOTOS! Always scrap with duplicates.

  2. Mat: (children often prefer to skip this step. That's fine!)

  3. Journal: Include their own words in telling the story of the event/experience.

  4. Mount/Adhere: Stick it on the page!

  5. Embellish: add stickers, diecuts, punchart, etc.

Once you've established these steps with them, you can offer these other ideas:

  • Different types of journaling: lists, bullet points, top ten, expository/paragraph, press release, dialogue, unsent letters -- see a list of descriptions here.

  • Using pocket pages

  • Elements of Design: Color, Balance, Negative Space, & Focal Point
