Are You Missing in Action in Your Scrapbooks?

So often we
scrapbookers are left out of our own albums because we are the ones behind the
camera. An informal study revealed that 80% of scrapbookers have never created a
layout about themselves. We family
historians are so busy documenting the lives of everyone around them, we forget
to document our own. After we’re
gone, who will tell our stories? Our
husbands? Our children?
Would they choose the same stories we would choose to tell about our
lives?

an old man dies, a library burns.”

The Book of Me Will Make It Easy to Tell Your
Stories!
The
Book of Me will not only inspire you to get yourself in your scrapbooks – it
will guide you step-by-step with HOW to do it!
The
Book of Me is a guide to help you, the scrapper, define what has significantly
contributed to your life, and what you value most about your experiences. It is
a roadmap to creating a book dedicated to your history, your passions, and your
dreams.
In
the foreword, journaling guru Joanna Campbell Slan tells the story of a young
mother dying of brain cancer, who spent her last days creating a legacy album
about her life so her young sons have something to remember her by.
|
“She
wanted them to know how much she loved them, and she wanted them to have
a mother forever, even if she only existed in a picture album and in
their memories. If she had
had Angie’s book, her task would have been much simpler...
...The
woman dying of cancer knew exactly how best to spend her final days.
You and I have a responsibility to create the same loving journal
for our own families. Let’s
get to it...” |

How
A 30-Year-Old Mother of Two
From Missouri Saved Her Own Life
With
Scrapbooking!
And
How She Can Help Save Yours!
From: Angie Pedersen
Author,
The Book of Me: A Guide to Scrapbooking about Yourself
Dear
Friend,
I
am a wife and mother, just like you.
After staying home with my children for six years, I began to have an
identity crisis. Or what I now
refer to as an “anti-identity crisis”.
I felt like my life could
be summed up in my roles of wife and mother.
That’s all there was to me.
Period.
Do
you ever feel that way? Like
you’ve lost track of who you were “before”, and who you are now?
As
I went about my days, I found myself thinking about all the tasks and chores and
errands I did. I wondered if there
was anything special about the fact that I was doing them.
I felt like we could hire someone to do the dishes and the laundry and
the cooking and running errands, and I wouldn’t even be missed.
I felt like I had failed to make a mark, and I could easily be replaced.
I even thought about taking my own life.
But instead of ending my life, I decided to scrap it.
Instead
of abandoning my husband and young children, and taking myself out of their
lives, I decided to share myself with them more fully.
I
decided to give them the gift only I could give. My stories.
What If You Could Prove to Yourself
the Value of Your
Own Life?
I started working on a scrapbook about myself.
It became a tool to showcase what made me unique, and all that I valued
about my life. And it quite
literally saved my life. Because
right there in front of me, created by my own hand, was proof that my life was
worth living, remembering, and celebrating.
As I showed this album to my friends, I saw that they were
almost startled -- so many of my friends had never thought of doing a page about
themselves, let alone actually done one. Just
like me, they were also absent from their own albums.
As much as I enjoyed the process of creating my Book of Me,
I realized other scrappers might be searching for ways to create such a book for
themselves. I wanted to help them by providing a roadmap for them to
follow, compiling all the resources I had drawn on. So, this book was
born.

Take
a look at the experience one scrapbooker had after picking up The Book of Me for
the first time. She recently had
three hours to kill at the airport, before boarding a three-hour flight, and...
Well, I’ll let her tell the story:
|
|
I just had to write to tell you what happened... I
finally sat down and pulled out the copy of your WONDERFUL book...and
started to read. I read the first two pages of prompts and suddenly
I couldn't sit still. I was DYING to start writing. I rushed
over to the little gift shop frantic for paper and pen...and panicked
because I couldn't find any. Finally after the second loop around
the shop, I found 3 or 4 yellow legal pads buried at the back of a shelf
and I literally let out a small, okay somewhat medium-sized, "Yay!"
The clerk ran from the back room asking if I was okay and I looked
at her with glazed eyes and said, "Pen...I need a pen!". We
found some rainbow gel pens...you know, the kind that change ink every 50
words or so, and I was ready to go.
I went to an area of computer stations outside the shop and began writing.
My fingers could barely keep up with my brain. Thoughts were
running through in all directions! I finally decided I needed to
start with a thesis statement to get some focus. I want you to know that I
wrote for the next 6 hours, only stopping to massage my writing wrist
every once in a while!!!! I wrote 36 pages of journaling and
completely used up the ink in 2 gel pens!!!! The lady sitting across
from me in the plane asked me if I was writing a book and I said,
"Well yes, I think I am!" I
was so inspired by your book in the first couple of pages; I can't wait to
see what's next!

I

wondering what "use" I was to the world!) so I am going to start on my
own scrapbook today...I love the book and I would have never started a Book
of Me without you!!!

I
just wanted to say how great I think the book is. It gave me
"permission" to scrapbook about myself without feeling like I was
being self-centered or bragging. I spend oodles of my time scrapping my kids,
friends, family, but as most of us I'm behind the camera...this lets me write
about myself and not feel "guilty." Thank you soooo much! Now I'll be
able to tell about myself so my children and their children will really get to
know me. Thank you again!

From
your books, the most important thing that I learned and what has stood out to me
the most can be summed up in one word: DETAILS. The prompting
questions that you give on each subject for journaling, the details that you ask
about...all of these are things I may never have thought of on my own nor
would I think anyone would care to know the details on ME. In your
books you have taken the time to dissect each subject into the nitty-gritty
detailed questions. Anyone using your books can comfortably follow these
prompts for journaling without the added pressure of wondering "what
can I write about this time of my life?" Thinking this
way has made me a better journaler and has also helped me in my blog writing,
sharing more of myself.
