HOLIDAY JOURNALS: Hold on to Your Holiday Joys!
By Sharon DeBartolo Carmack

If you've never kept a holiday journal before, there's no need to fret that you've missed out on several years of recording holiday memories. You can start at any time, and reconstruct previous years by talking with family members and asking them what they remember. This can be a marvelous activity for a family gathering that takes place around the holidays. A journal is all you need to start. And, it doesn't matter whether you purchase a special journal-type book, a scrapbook, or a three-ring binder. The content in between the covers is what's important.

One type of holiday journal can focus on your religious celebrations during the winter months. No matter what religion you practice, this can be a great way to record your familiy's traditions for future generations. Here are some prompts based on a few religious holidays to get you started:

Christian

Record when you typically go to Christmas church services.
What was the holiday message delivered by the clergy?
Were there special programs or events, such as caroling, you participated in?

Jewish

When your family lights the menorah for Hanukkah, what songs do you offer?
Does your family have a dreidel? What conversations occur while playing this game?
Are there special activities at your synagogue during Hanukkah that you attended?

Islamic

How does your family celebrate Ramadhan? For how long does your family fast?
When the fast is broken, what foods do you eat?
What kind of holiday attire is worn in your family?
